🦷 Why 4-Legger Dental Powder Works
Mechanical Disruption
Plaque must be mechanically disrupted before it hardens into tartar.
Ingredient Simplicity
Dogs swallow dental products, so ingredient safety truly matters.
No Chemical Shortcuts
Healthy mouths depend on balance, not harsh chemicals or odor masking.
Simple, Biologically Appropriate Ingredients
At the heart of 4-Legger Dental Powder is a simple, time-tested blend of sea salt, baking soda, and peppermint.
Together, these ingredients gently disrupt plaque, support healthy gums, neutralize acid-producing bacteria, activate your dog’s natural saliva, and freshen breath naturally — without synthetic fragrance or chemical shortcuts.
We focus on ingredients that work with your dog’s biology, not against it. Each component plays a functional role in supporting daily dental care — from plaque disruption to gum support — without relying on harsh chemicals or artificial additives.
Ingredient Benefits & How They Support Oral Health
Peppermint Essential Oil
Makes your dog's breath minty fresh and is extremely effective at
killing anaerobic bacteria, the type of bacteria that thrives in a low oxygen environment such as the mouth - protecting your dog's mouth from gum disease.
Pure Baking Soda
Highly alkaline, and because of this it creates an environment that is not favorable to bacteria while neutralizing acids in the mouth (acids cause tooth decay and dental cavities).
For centuries baking soda has worked to naturally whiten teeth and freshen breath. It's abrasive enough to wash your dog's teeth of oral plaque without deteriorating their tooth enamel.
Sea Salt
Packed with minerals (calcium, magnesium, silicon, phosphorus, sodium, nickel, iodine & iron) that reduces inflammation, strengthens gums, and neutralizes acids while being abrasive enough to clean but not damage the tooth enamel.
Sea salt also increases the production of saliva allowing your dog's natural antibacterials to safeguard their enamel.

How To Clean Your Dog's Teeth
Introducing oral care to your dog takes time and patience. The key is to start slow and make the experience positive. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you through the process using 4-Legger Dental Powder:
- Start early: It's best to start brushing your dog's teeth when they are still a puppy. This will help them get used to the sensation and make it part of their daily routine.
- Choose the right time: Find a time when your dog is relaxed and calm, such as after a walk or play session. Avoid cleaning their teeth when they are overly excited or tired as it typically won't go well.
- Select the location: Identify where you are going to clean their teeth and keep the location consistent so they know and understand what to expect.
- Start with your finger: For the first few sessions, use your finger to get your dog used to the sensation of having their teeth brushed. Gently rub your finger along their gums and teeth in a circular motion. The first session may be just a few quick seconds. Each session should increase the time until they are used to the sensation. Go to Step #8 after each session!
- Introduce the cleaning technique: Once your dog is comfortable with your finger, it’s time to start cleaning. Building on the same technique of using your finger, add a small piece of damp gauze over your fingertip and repeat the session to allow your dog to get used to the new sensation of the gauze. Remember when you clean your dog's teeth to not press in to the teeth. You are simply cleaning - not trying to scrape anything off the teeth.
- Gently brush in a circular motion: Hold your gauze-covered finger at a 45-degree angle to your dog's teeth and gently brush in a circular motion. Focus on the gum line and all surfaces of the teeth.
- Introduce the tooth powder: Now that they have gotten used to the sensation of rubbing and gentle agitation, it is time to introduce the dental powder! Pour a tiny amount (pea size) of dental powder into your other palm. Dip your finger with the damp gauze into the powder and rub along the gum line and in a circular motion on the teeth to gently agitate.
- Reward and praise: After each successful toothbrushing session, reward your dog with a high value treat, praise, and affection to positively reinforce the experience. I stress that you should give a high value treat over the usual treat. Dogs absolutely know the difference between a high value reward and your run of the mill reward. If you can make this reward so special that they ONLY get it after teeth brushing, even better!

FAQs
Occasional odor can happen, but persistent bad breath is usually a sign of plaque buildup and gum inflammation. It’s often one of the earliest indicators of dental disease.
We've found that dogs like routines and while brushing teeth isn't a ton of fun, making it part of their routine is the best way to get them on board! Make it as fun as you can and lavish them with praise! Our 4-Leggers stand in line for teeth brushing!
Start by letting your dog watch you prepare the very best reward a human can offer (this will vary by dog).
Wet toothbrush & apply dental powder. Lift your dog's muzzle to gently brush teeth and gums. When done - give reward!

Yes. The quality of essential oils is very important.
We work really hard to make sure our essential oils are diluted properly, unadulterated, safe, non-toxic and their essential oil constituent profiles are safe.
You use a very small amount of the dental powder on a soft bristle toothbrush.
Ideally, a few times per week is enough to significantly reduce plaque buildup.
Daily brushing is great, but consistency matters more than perfection. Even short, gentle sessions help when done regularly.
In general, water additives rely on chemical agents to slow tartar formation, but they don’t physically remove plaque.
Because they’re ingested continuously, ingredient quality and long-term exposure should be carefully considered.
We'd not use them on our dogs.
A well-formulated dental powder like 4-Legger provides gentle mechanical cleaning and supports a balanced oral environment without relying on harsh chemicals.
Powders pair naturally with brushing and are often better tolerated by dogs.
Yes — when used correctly. Gentle abrasives like baking soda, combined with consistent brushing and supportive ingredients, can effectively disrupt plaque without damaging enamel or irritating gums.
Consistency. Regular mechanical plaque removal, paired with safe, biologically appropriate ingredients, is far more effective than occasional use of stronger or chemically aggressive products.
Human toothpaste often contains fluoride, artificial sweeteners, or foaming agents that are unsafe for dogs to swallow. Dogs ingest most dental products, so formulas must be designed specifically for canine biology.
