Looking for Oatmeal Dog Shampoo?

Yesterday someone asked me why our oatmeal and lavender dog shampoo label was the oatmeal color instead of the lavender.

Quite simply, it was because our oatmeal shampoo for dogs uses oatmeal that is packed with more benefits than colloidal oatmeal dog shampoo and we wanted to highlight it. We felt the oatmeal color, while not as pretty as the lavender was so special it deserved the accent color on the label!

Yes - the lavender smells great and it is my favorite body wash. That's right, I use it on myself (and I'm not the only one)! But, the oatmeal is what really makes this blend remarkable.

Of course you want the best oatmeal shampoo for dogs available, but do you know the difference between colloidal oatmeal shampoo for dogs and our organic oatmeal dog shampoo or the difference in plant quality?

Oatmeal Quality

Oatmeal comes from the Avena sativa plant, an absolutely beautiful crop when you see it waving in the field on a windy day.

There has been a lot of talk about oat milk in recent years as it is more sustainable than almond milk or dairy and also, it has not been associated with deforestation.

Unfortunately, a study by the Environmental Working Group found glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup and a suspected carcinogen, in all the human foods it tested containing conventionally grown oats. It is because in mass-produced monoculture operations, Roundup pesticide is sprayed right before harvest.

If tested, you would find these same contaminates are in the colloidal oatmeal dog shampoo and human oatmeal products as well.

The pesticides reduce the bugs in the harvested crops which allows them to dry better before being processed.

This is why it is critically important to know where your oats are coming from, how they are grown and whether they are truly USDA organic (grown without pesticides and herbicides).

Oats may also be genetically modified (GMO) or non-GMO.

So, even when the oatmeal is in the ground there are a lot of quality choices that need to be made.

What is Colloidal Oatmeal?

Colloidal (in the simplest of terms) means that it is ground up until it is so small in size (44 microns or less) that it can be suspended in a liquid.

There is a ton of research on the benefits of colloidal oatmeal as it contains a number of beneficial active compounds - saponins, flavonoids, minerals, alkaloids, steroidal compounds, vitamins and carotene—as well as the highest protein (15 to 20%) and lipid (3 to 11%) content of any grain.

The lipids are naturally protected from oxidation by natural antioxidant compounds called avenanthramides.

Within hours of being de-hulled, the oats can turn rancid if they aren't processed due to the naturally high lipase enzyme levels. This should be done by steam heat to reduce the release of free fatty acids which could cause potential skin irritation.

What Makes Our Oatmeal Based Dog Shampoo So Beneficial

Oats also have a naturally high oil content which is absent in colloidal oats.

The oat oil is a mixture of lipid components - each with their own biological functions.

What is most remarkable about oat oil is it’s high content of linoleic acid which has been shown to prevent water loss at the skin level and it’s ability to protect and restore the skin layers - a huge factor in atopic dermatitis, inflammatory disease and the itch-scratch cycle.

These oils, with the natural beneficial components in the oatmeal makes our oatmeal dog shampoo for itchy skin a truly unique product.
